Halloween Fun!
We had a ton of fun this week with the Live Wax Museum and the field trip to the Orchestra. And we capped it all off with a day full of Halloween fun!
During our science time, we did an investigation involving PUMPKINS. Students measured to find the weight of their pumpkins.

Then, they measured the circumference of their pumpkin.

Next, they counted the number of lines around their pumpkin. When we compared our data, the students were surprised to find that no matter the size of the pumpkin, they all have about the same number of lines.

Then, we checked to see if the pumpkins would sink or float! Most of the kids predicted that the pumpkins would sink because they are so heavy, but in reality they all FLOAT because of the hollow space inside making the overall pumpkin less dense than the water!

Finally, they got down and dirty counting the number of seeds in their pumpkins!

Again, the kids were very surprised to find out that the smallest of the pumpkins had a great number of seeds, even more than some of the larger pumpkins. This is because the smaller pumpkins have a poorer chance of getting eaten in the wild and so it's extra amount of seeds give it a better chance of being able to reproduce. There's also another explanation involving the next thing we're going to be studying in science - ENERGY! If the pumpkin plant exerts less energy on the size of the pumpkin, it can use more more energy to create more seeds!

In the afternoon, we had our Halloween party! We had so much food, even my extended day class couldn't finish the leftovers! Thanks so much for all the parents who sent stuff in and for all the parents who joined us for the party yesterday! Our next big party will be just before winter break!

After all that fun we had this week, I for one am VERY anxious to get back to a NORMAL week of school next week! See you on Monday and have a safe and fun Halloween! Also, feel free to e-mail pictures of your Halloween costumes and I'll post them on the blog for the whole class to see!

Jacksonville Symphony Orhcestra
We had a blast today at the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra!
Here's the class on the HOT bus waiting to leave.
Here they are at the concert hall waiting for the big show!
The show started with a lively performance of the "Mission: Impossible" theme, leading into a mystery story. One of the performer's tuba was stolen and the audience had to help find it using musical "clues" to determine where he was!
