Important Notice Coming Tomorrow!
Parents - There is an important notice coming home to your children along with progress reports this week! It'll fill you on (almost) all of the big events taking place over the next few months at school! Be sure to check your child's planner tomorrow!
Extra Credit!
Another easy way to earn extra credit! Split a paper into two columns. In the first, write the name of each object below. In the second, tell what type of simple machine each item is. Then put your name on it and turn it in! It's that easy!

Westward Expansion!
We've just started studying one of the most exciting periods in American history - a time when America expanded from being a tiny, weak nation into one of the largest and most powerful countries in the world! We'll be learning about all the great and wonderful things that came out of the 19th century, including the Industrial Revolution, the acquisition of new land, and the westward movement! But we'll also be taking a look at some of the darker and more disturbing things that were done in America during that same time, namely the unfair treatment of women, the enslavement of black Americans, and the mass extermination and exile of the Native Americans.
Coming up in a couple weeks, we'll be doing another one of our roll-playing simulation games! The kids had a great time with our explorers simulation, learning about the many dangers and hardships of European explorers attempting to cross the Atlantic Ocean. This time, they'll tackle disease, river crossings, Buffalo stampedes, Native American encounters, deadly storms, and the Rocky Mountains as they head west along the Oregon Trail! This time there will be rewards for the people who do the best job surviving the simulation! Check the blog frequently, as I will be adding hints and clues to help you make it through successfully! But they won't be posted in plain sight! They'll be hidden throughout the blog. Search around and you'll start finding some!

Reminders!
Important Reminders -
Valentine's Day is Sunday, but we're exchanging Valentine cards on Friday! Those who wish to participate should bring enough Valentine cards and/or candy for all 21 students in our class. If you like, you may also bring cards for both classes.
Humane Society Donations will continue to be accepted up through NEXT FRIDAY. If you would like to make a donation in memory of Ms. Harris, turn in your donation in a SEALED ENVELOPE, with the name Susan Cheung on the front. If you are writing a check, make it out to the Humane Society.
End of the Year Trip is being planned, and a permission slip and more information will be coming out soon. But for now, I can tell you that it will be on June 10th, the second to last day of school. We will be traveling by bus to Disney's Animal Kingdom!!! The cost of the trip, including bus, parking, admission, and the end of the year fifth grade picnic, will be $60. Also remember, that students must have met their 25 book goal and have no conduct referrals in order to go on the trip.
FCAT is in just a few weeks! It begins on Tuesday, March 9th and continues until March 17th (no test on Mondays or Fridays those weeks).
Check the blog frequently!! - There will be loads of new things going on as we move further into the second half of the year! Lots of events, activities, projects, and other stuff that you'll need to be aware of, so make sure to check the blog at least daily!

Extra Credit!
Today, we determined some formulas for determining the number of faces, edges, and vertices for any PRISM. If the shape is an N-ogonal Prism (a prism in which the top and bottom faces have N number of sides), then the shape will have N+2 faces, Nx3 edges, and Nx2 vertices.
For extra credit, come up with similar formulas for determining the number of faces, edges, and vertices for any PYRAMID. You should have three formulas all together. Also include a chart like the one we made in class to demonstrate that your answer is correct, using examples, like the Triangular Pyramid, Square Pyramid, and Hexagonal Pyramid shown below.

Force, Motion, and LAPTOPS!
We started our work on force and motion this week with a lot of experiments!
On Tuesday, we did an experiment involving measuring and comparing the speed of a marble as it was sent down a ramp at varying heights.
On Thursday we did two experiments involving friction. The first examined the effects of added mass on the amount of friction.
The second looked at the effects of different surfaces and how they effect friction.
But the biggest bit of excitement this week came today:
Starting today, our class will have access to computers ALL DAY LONG every FRIDAY!! We made really great use of the computers today in math and science. In math, we worked with a program called "Geo-Logo" which allows you to use basic programming code to draw polygons and learn about angles and other geometric properties. Today was our first day with the program, and we'll be using it frequently throughout the next few weeks.
Then we worked on a Gizmo called Force and Fan Carts, in which we explored the effects of adjusting the amount of force and the amount of friction on a fan-powered cart.
The kids absolutely loved working on the computers most of the day! But even more wonderful is all the learning they get out of the experience! I'm really excited about having these computers every single week!
