Class Luncheon
Our "First Nine Weeks Class Luncheon That Is Definitely Not a Halloween Party" is this Wednesday at 12:50 for students who have paid the rent to eat lunch in the classroom for this month! Parents are also welcomed to join us. Pizza will be provided, and anyone who would like to bring something in anything (mostly finger-food) in addition to the pizza would be much appreciated. In particular, if someone would like to provide drinks, please let me know - NOTE: We have no ice machine at our school anymore, so bring something that can be put in the refrigerator in the morning.

Science Test Friday
We will be having a unit science test this coming Friday on Weather, Climate, and the Water Cycle. Some concepts/vocabulary that children will need to know for the test include:
water cycle (precipitation, evaporation, condensation, collection, runoff)
reservoirs (lake, ocean, river, aquafir)
elements of weather (air pressure, humidity, precipitation, temperature, wind speed)
types of precipitation (rain, snow, sleet, hail)
factors that influence climate (elevation, latitude, bodies of water)
convection currents
We will be practicing/reviewing these concepts over the course of the week before the test on Friday.

Convection Current
Yesterday, we used a model to show the flow of air in a convection current. We used water to represent air. The red water is boiling hot and immediately rises when released in the tank filled with room temperature water because it is warmer and thus less dense. The blue, ice cold water sinks because it is more dense than the rest of the water.
The bottom of the tank is being heated by a bowl of boiling water to represent the solar radiation heating the Earth's surface.
As the cold water is warmed it begins to rise and move the red water down. Eventually the water is all mixed and you can't distinguish the colors, but the cycle is still continuing to flow.

Bonus Money Challenge
Want to earn MEGA Bonus Money this week? This week we are practicing with words that can be written in multiple forms (derivatives), such as the six on your vocabulary list. You can earn bonus money by finding more words like this over the weekend?
Make a table like the one below on a piece of paper (you can type it out if you like). Try to find as many different derivatives for different words as you can. Some words can only be written in two or three forms, and not all four. Others can be written in four different forms, like "amaze". Sometimes words in different forms may be spelled the same - such as "duplicate" used as a noun, verb, and adjective.
On your table, include words that can be written in AT LEAST three different forms. You will get $5 in bonus money for each SET of words that you find. For example, for the list below, you would get $20.
Your words can be simple, easy words or more challenging words. But you should have a general idea of what the words mean. You may not use any of the words from the list below or from your vocabulary list this week. Also, messy, unreadable lists will be discarded.
As an extra incentive - The student who has the MOST words on their list will earn an extra $100 on top of the $5 per word!

Unit Math Test on Friday
This Friday, we will be having a unit test on Multiplication and Division. The students will have to solve higher-level multiplication and division problems using strategies that we have developed in class. You can work with your child on these methods using the videos below. In them, I have thoroughly explained several strategies used by my students over the past few days to solve these more complicated math problems. Look for some more videos later today and again tomorrow. Next week, we will begin a very lengthy unit on Fractions that will take us all the way through to Christmas. But multiplication and division are skills they will continue to use throughout the year in the next as well as subsequent units.
