A Whole Lot Happening in May and June!

May 2
Symphony Field Trip – We will once again be taking a field trip to the Symphony for the morning.  Best thing about this trip – It’s free!
May 16
Zoo Field Trip – All day trip to the Jacksonville Zoo!  Make sure to send a bagged/boxed lunch with your child.
May 17
5th Grade Dance – All fifth graders are invited to come let loose with all of their friends they’ve known for so long.  There will be music, snacks, games, and lots and lots of dancing!
May 20-May 24
7th Annual Knowledge-Bowl – This is an event unique to Mr. Sofferin’s class!  It’s a week-long competition to see who has accumulated the most knowledge over the course of the year.  Students will be facing off against each other to answer questions about science, social studies, math, books we’ve read, and even each other!  This year there will be some brand new twists and surprises to make it a little different from last year!
May 23
Chorus/ORFF Concert – The last concert presented by Mrs. Laymon and the Beauclerc Chorus and ORFF.
May 25
Class Lunch Out – We’ll get together on a Saturday before school gets out to have lunch.  This will not replace our class party, which will be during the last week of school.
May 28
Live Wax Museum – A fifth grade presentation of reports about famous, important people from history.
May 30
Play Day – A half-day of fun, relay-style competitions.
May 31
American Grandstand – A special presentation put on by the Beauclerc fifth graders, in which they will perform as various musical acts from the 70s and 80s.
June 4
End of the Year Party – I’ll hand out individual awards, specially made photo collages, DVD yearbooks, and some other special surprises, and then we’ll have pizza while we look back on some wonderful memories from the past three years.
June 5
Trip to Wild Adventures – The whole fifth grade hits the road and heads to Wild Adventures for the day!
June 6
Awards & End of the Year Picnic – Students will receive awards at the award ceremony.  Then the whole fifth grade will have a HUGE picnic/party on the third to last day of school!  Let me know if you’d like to help with serving food or anything else during this event!
June 7
Last Day of School – Students will receive their report cards, and we’ll share one final morning together.  Please try to make sure your child is present on this day, as it will be a very special day that they won’t want to miss.

Changes Made to Schedule of Events

I've made some changes to the schedule of events off to the right.  I added a few new dates - Play Day, Symphony Field Trip, Chorus/ORFF, and Wax Museum.  The dates for the End of the Year Party and American Grandstand have been changed, and I added a class lunch out, which will be distinct from the class party.

A flyer will come home on Friday with Report Cards, with more information on these events, and even more details will be posted here on the blog as the dates get closer.

Buckle up!  It's going to be a VERY BUSY several weeks!

A Very Yoshi-Happy Day in Room 40

Last year we were devastated to learn that Leonardo would be moving to Brazil right before the end of the year and wouldn't continue on to fifth grade with us. Recently, we found out that Alexis would soon be moving to Tennessee and would miss the end of fifth grade.

Well today was probably the best day ever! First, Alexis shared the wonderful news that she wouldn't be moving after all. Then, completely out of the blue, Leonardo showed up! What we though was just a visit turned out to be a homecoming, as his mother told us he they would be staying and that Leonardo would get to rejoin our class for the end of fifth grade.

This was easily the best day EVER!

FCAT Starts on Monday!

It's time once again for everyone's favorite time of the school year!  FCAT Week!  Hurray!  This time, we have two weeks of FCAT!  Here's what you get to look forward to for the next two weeks:
  •  Monday, April 15 - Reading - 70 Minutes
  • Tuesday, April 16 - Reading - 70 Minutes
  • Wednesday, April 17 - Science - 80 Minutes
  • Thursday, April 18 - Science - 80 Minutes
  • Wednesday, April 24 - Math - 70 Minutes
  • Thursday, April 25 - Math - 70 Minutes
Of course, in room 40, we have NOTHING to worry about when it comes to the "FCAT".  Our class has consistently excelled in every opportunity we've had.  I have no doubt the same will be true this coming week.  But just to make sure that we do the best that we can, remember the following:
  • Get a good night's sleep Sunday night - 70 minutes reading is tough even with sleep - It'll be harder if you're not rested!
  • Eat a decent breakfast - McDonalds will once again be giving free breakfast to students taking the FCAT- so get there early for your Egg McMuffin breakfast!  But don't drink too much juice or milk with your breakfast!
  • Get to school on time!
That's about it!  Other than that, enjoy your weekend and get ready to lay the smack-down on the FCAT on Monday!
