Yesterday, we used a model to show the flow of air in a convection current. We used water to represent air. The red water is boiling hot and immediately rises when released in the tank filled with room temperature water because it is warmer and thus less dense. The blue, ice cold water sinks because it is more dense than the rest of the water.
The bottom of the tank is being heated by a bowl of boiling water to represent the solar radiation heating the Earth's surface.
As the cold water is warmed it begins to rise and move the red water down. Eventually the water is all mixed and you can't distinguish the colors, but the cycle is still continuing to flow.
